Ebook About
From the best-selling author of The Seven Daughters of Eve, an eye-opening work no dog lover or ancestry aficionado should be without. How did wolves evolve into dogs? When did this happen, and what role did humans play? Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes used the full array of modern technology to explore the canine genetic journey when our ancestors first learned to hunt together with wolves. In the process, he discovered that only a handful of genes have created the huge range of shapes, sizes, and colors in modern dogs. Providing insight into these adaptive stages in “prose both scientific and poetic” (Booklist), Once a Wolf also focuses attention on how human evolution was enhanced by this most improbable ally. Whether examining our obsession with canine purity or delving into the prehistoric past to answer the most fundamental question of all—Why do we love our dog so much?—this book is “a must read for anybody who has ever wondered about the origins of human’s best friend” (Library Journal).

Book Once a Wolf: The Science that Reveals Our Dogs' Genetic Ancestry Review :

Once a Wolf is an amazing book (except for Chapter 23) for dog lovers and/or anyone interested in starting to understand genetics and the evolution of the dog. Over the course of this year due to interest in fostering and rescuing, I intend to continue reading a number of dog behavior and other dog books and this book was one of the groups recommendation. I am glad I took the suggestion as I could not put it down and have quickly read through this book and intend to read the book again. The book provides a well written and scientifically backed (Upper Palaeolithic) evolution of the dog (with some writer liberties that make sense) to today's beloved pet and multitude of dog breeds. I see some other comments regarding the scientific errors in the book and references to other books which I have not read but will do so now. Perhaps after that my stars may change; however, for a person with limited genetic knowledge, I found this book to be an excellent starting point and easy reading. He also provides information on dog breeds and standards which takes a fact based opinion, not an emotional or monetary one, probably due to his honesty that he is not a huge dog lover. In my opinion, this respect for the dog, but not huge love, is what makes this book so powerful and believable. At the heart, he is a scientist, a geneticist, whose research concentrated on the human past and that past lead him to question the remarkable evolution of the dog. Lets face it, as we cannot go back in time, scientist will always debate so take the book for what it is and is not. Statistics and sample sets can change the results and continued research is teaching scientist a lot about the complexity of genetics. For me, Sykes clarifies the ago old question of where did the dog come from and has helped me to understanding the starting of genetics and even a number of questions I have related to dogs. Sykes demonstrates that the evolution from wolf to dog probably started as a symbiotic relationship that has gradually evolved to our beloved family member of today. If you have any interest in starting to learn about genetics; its successes and its limitation. Sykes does an excellent job of providing a balance between science and readability. Sykes also explains how and why humans have developed such a love of the dog, but pure hate and misunderstanding of the wolf - how and why is the wolf the story of such evil? The only Chapter I did not enjoy was Chapter 23 and unfortunately this did distract from the book. I probably should have given 4 stars as a result; however, I enjoyed it so much I gave the 5 and ignored any influence from this chapter. This Chapter is Ulla's interviews of dog owners and they are written more as random thoughts than short story regarding the love the owner feels for their dog. This is known to dog lovers and was not necessary for this book. . I struggled to understand the purpose in the book and ended up skipping them. Perhaps when I reread the book, I will be able to enjoy the Chapter. It just doesn't fit with the science and the writing throughout the book. It should have been left out or at the end of the book after Chapters 24 and Chapter 25. These Chapters go back to the science and are worth reading (Cloning and Beyond the Reach of Reason).
But zero for the rest. If you want to love this book, stop reading once you hit Chapter 23.I was enthralled by "The Seven Daughters of Eve," and as a dog-lover, this book was a must-have for me. I gobbled up the first 3/4 of the book about the evolution of dogs from wolves, how the wolf/dog-human relationships were first established, how selective breeding pretty much domesticated the wolf/dog and then, in modern times, established what we now view as "purebreds." The writing is clear enough for the non-geneticist, with scientific terms fully explained in laypersons' language. To this point, I can't think of a single negative. But then . . . the author's wife starts interviewing dog owners about their relationships with their pets, whether they'd spend thousands of dollars (or pounds) to save or prolong a dog's life, buy it expensive "bling," and so on. The most startling and disturbing part comes when she asks on behalf of her "scientist" husband whether or not the people love their dogs. What??????? This has nothing whatsoever to do with genetics or evolution or anything scientific except perhaps for a researcher into the psychology of the human/dog bond. I don't know how many people she interviewed, but one would have been too many. The last chapter has to do solely with cloning. Again, nothing to do with evolution. It's meaningless in the grand context of the book itself. This scholarly but accessible look at the evolution of the dog should have ended several chapters before it actually does. So do yourself a favor and skip the end, so you can grant it the five stars I couldn't bring myself to do.
