After much research, I purchased this book and adore it! It contains profiles and beautiful photographs of over 175 dog breeds (the ones I'm most interested in). I love the breed groups being the same as the AKC's groups. Each breed is given a two-page spread with two photographs and detailed information. I like the feel of the hardback copy and find it easy to handle. I first purchased DK's The Complete Dog Breed Book which contains over 400 dog breeds with nice photographs and profiles. But I didn't like the breed groupings in that one and didn't need so many breeds. This one, Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, is definitely a winner for me! This is an excellent reference book on dog breeds. The current edition is the second one we've had here. We gave our first edition to another person, but we found we just couldn't be happy without this book as a reference. The current edition lists many breeds which are new to the AKC. I should also note that while the current edition is an excellent compromise in terms of completeness and ease of use, it's not the only good reference on dog breeds. Its descriptions of the temperament of some breeds are too complimentary, in keeping with the AKC's general way of description of breeds. But I still give it five stars because it *is* the best compromise in terms of ease of use and completelness - far better than most references which are marketed to the general public.
